Janow Podlaski, November 2009 - after returning our leased stallion El Azem, Director Dr. Marek Trela took us on a round through the stables. After admiring the gorgeous mares, we went to the building where the colts of that year were kept, more than 40. Among them, at the very first look, one bay colt stood out, a true eyecatcher, not so much because of his x-large eyes, pretty head, long neck, perfect build, but of his uncomparable type and charisma. It was obvious, that Dr. Trela knew exactly that this colt was really special! When he told us the colt's breeding, we were even more excited, Petla being a producer of top class - stallions. We knew that one day, we would breed our best mares to him. Just one thing I did not like was his name: Pogrom - which I associate with the Holocaust persecution of the Jews during Hitler's horror regime (my family were members of the resistance against this most terrible government, I grew up with most negative feelings for the ideas of "Nationalsozialismus"). When I mentioned the connotation, Dr. Trela asked me if I knew what "pogrom" meant in polish language. He told us, when he saw the newborn foal for the first time, he said to the groom, "He will be a pogrom of his competitors." “Here, this word is popular and in use in sports, or any other competitive events or military reports and is also very traditional, it is understood as “invincible force” or “invincible hero. In fact, ‘pogrom’ has to do with the scale of the victory of one team over another. The last thing I would have wanted to do is hurt somebody. Especially in a country like Poland we know what the Holocaust was.”
Bialka 2010 - Spring Show: it is always very exciting to see this show, a large number of yearlings comes out for the first time. Will there be a great Champion, or a world class breeding stallion for the future?
Pogrom showed himself unbelievably — so impressive, winning his class (beating the beautiful Empire from Michalow) was just a formality, later, the judges chose him for junior champion and "Best of show". He was very balanced, with a lot of attitude and trot.
Janow Podlaski 2010 - Polish Nationals: again the flashy colt was attracting attention everywhere. This time, Empire nailed the first place and the gold medal in the Junior Championship for Colts, Pogrom received "only" second place and silver.
Paris 2010 - Salon du Cheval: Pogrom did not fare as well. Did he simply not appeal to the show’s panel of judges? But in the end, as things would turn out nearly a year later, it appears not to have mattered; David Boggs, standing on the rail in Paris, was making plans the colt’s future: “I first laid eyes on Pogrom in Paris, at the Salon du Cheval, where he made a brilliant entrance into the arena,” Boggs recalls. “He took my breath away at that first meeting (and he still makes my heart beat fast when I see him in motion).”
Janow Podlaski 2011 - Polish Nationals: Pogrom had matured over the winter and had even more presence as he bid to surpass his earlier silver medal. Now on the radar of serious fans, he was scrutinized more carefully than ever as he entered the ring for his 2-Year-Old class. As it turned out, showing with Pawel Kozikowski, he decked his competition; Judges Sylvie Eberhardt (Germany), Ali Shaarawi (Egypt) and Allan Preston (Australia) selected him for the winning ribbon. And against heavy competition in the Junior Championship, he came away with the Gold Medal—sending the buzz that had surrounded him for more than a year into overdrive!
At that point, Dr. Trela agreed to a two-year lease and David Boggs got on the phone to Jeff Sloan at Aria International, which had overseen the lease or purchase of several Polish luminaries—among them Pianissima, Piaff, Emandoria and Elandra — over the past seven years. Trela observes that he believes the United States to be the best place for Pogrom at the opening of his breeding career. His only regret is that Pogrom will not have an opportunity to prove himself on the racetrack which has been a "must" for all polish stallions used in the breeding programs of the State Stud Farms.
“Once the agreement was signed, the news traveled very quickly,” Boggs reports. “Pogram was a sensation with the huge crowd that gathered to meet him at the Midwest Gala on the Scottsdale ArabHorse Farm Tour over New Year’s. Here is a horse who had just arrived on American soil and cleared quarantine before the New Year’s presentation. No one had seen him, but from that point through the Scottsdale Show, he sold over 100 breeding rights. It’s amazing.
“This is the next giant in my life,” he continues. “It’s that top one percent of quality—a great individual—along with correct pricing and incentives, and a great marketing team behind him. It’s the whole package with Pogrom. He gives me goosebumps every day; he’s a phenomenal horse. I don’t know that I’ve felt such a lightning bolt in my hands since Magnum.”
Also at Midwest, Pogrom continued his career in the showring, besides being really busy with breeding duties:
Scottsdale 2013 - Pogrom sets his first mark in US
David Boggs reports: "After the rain, hail and snow we endured early in the week, the day of *Pogrom’s class was very cool – but sunny. *Pogrom’s coat shimmered in the sunlight as he was led to the show arena. The brisk air invigorated him as he pranced and flagged his tail – he was controlled power – until he burst into the ring! *Pogrom’s natural charisma, towering stature and powerful movement brought tremendous cheers from the crowd. He responded proudly with extreme excitement and energy as he displayed his near perfect Arabian type and beauty.
Pogrom was happy and confident in the ring and he showed to the judges beautifully. The class was small, but deep. We were thrilled as the stallions were called out to stand before the judges in the order which they placed the class. With each judges’ line up, our spirits soared. Judge number one’s first place pick: Pogrom! Judge number two’s first place pick: Pogrom! Judge number three’s first place pick: Pogrom! It was unanimous - Pogrom was named the Scottsdale Champion Four Year Old Stallion!
Las Vegas 2013 - Arabian Breeders World Cup
"From the Polish point of view the most interesting of the first three days of the 7th Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas (US) was Saturday, April 20th. That was the day of the stallions’ performances, among which was Pogrom (QR Marc – Pętla/Visbaden), bred and owned by Janów Podlaski, leased by Midwest Arabian. The Senior Champion Stallion and Supreme Champion from Scottsdale caused quite a stir not only among Polish spectators, but among the entire public gathered at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa, where the show took place. Without a doubt he was one of the biggest stars of this event from the very beginning. When he appeared on the arena in the 4 year old stallions’ class, a thunder of applause filled the building. His handler, Paweł Kozikowski, led him calmly and with a poker face. It was clear that the handler – who also has a large group of devoted fans – was very focused. “Love the handler from Poland!” was one of the comments beside the online broadcast chat. “They belong together!”. “Maybe they speak the same language”. „Pogrom has the whole package!” It has to be said that Paweł Kozikowski endured the tension and did not allow the restless stallion to break free from under his control. During the initial walk-around they looked fantastic together and there were no doubts as to who would win this class. Unfortunately during the individual presentation the horse was too excited and did not want to display his movement, which soon resulted in his marks – just 4 x 18,5 and one 19 for this trait. He made up for it thanks to his perfect presentation in halt and as many as four top marks for type and head, which gave him a total of 336,5 points. This once again proved that it’s not easy to reconcile a show career with that of a breeding sire.
Deserving a separate mention is the performance of the „king of the ring” WH Justice (Magnum Psyche – Vona-Sher-Renea/El Sher-Mann). Everyone awaited his appearance, which – according to the catalogue – was to take place in the 9 year old and older stallions’ class, made up of two horses. But instead of the expected grey, a bay horse entered the arena! After a temporary consternation it turned out that a separate category was created for WH Justice – stallions aged 12 and above, in which he competed all by himself. In such a way a tribute was paid to the trendiest and most influential stallion of recent years. Thanks to as many as ten “20s” (for type, head and movement) he gained a whopping final score of 340,5 points! WH Justice was shown by a relaxed Michael Byatt, who did not spare the public contact with their favorite. " David Boggs
At last, in the Senior Stallion's Championship, these two great horses were standing side by side, and spectators were able to compare. Greatest tension bristled everywhere. Pogrom, tall, with aristocratic presence and exotic refinement, with unparalleled balance, substance, strength, structure and inherent athletic ability, as well as his overwhelmingly commanding presence and huge, luminous eyes. Despite an extremely strong competition (WH Justice, who was awarded with the show’s highest score), Pogrom defeated his rivals in the finals and claimed the title of Gold Senior Champion Stallion, supported by an enthusiastic audience.
Janów Podlaski 2014 Polish Nationals
Back home, the highly decorated Pogrom (QR Marc – Pętla/Visbaden) seemed a certain candidate for the title of Polish National Champion. Meanwhile the stallion had grown very restless, on the verge of burning himself out; in the ring, Pogrom was difficult to handle, and hardly expressed his incredible show ring attitude and self-confidence, the opposite can be said for Michałów's Equator (QR Marc – Ekliptyka/Ekstern), also a most impressive stallion. The Janów team were clearly disappointed and the public slightly surprised. In the face of such a verdict the finals were settled in advance – gold for Equator and silver for Pogrom. It seems obvious, that those horses who returned from abroad, esp. when tiresome journeys are involved, need time to acclimatise. The last chapter of Pogrom's show success is not written, for sure!
Janów Podlaski, March 2015 - the reunion:
We visit Janow and - of course - we most of all want to see the stallion's stables. It is noon and the stallions eat their oats. In the last box to the left (the same box where Kahil Al Shaqab spent his time), a small, refined bay head with a star looks at us, large velvet eyes full of self confidence, intelligence and pride. Still the stallion is very friendly and gracefully puts his head to us when we enter his box, the oats forgotten. An easy, unanimous decision to breed one of our mares to him.
Pogrom’s significance lies in his well-rounded contribution to Arabian breeding programs. “Many people are breeding for nice faces, and many don’t care for the other qualities of the horse,” Dr. Trela says. “The Polish breeding program tries to combine the Arabian type, beauty and charisma with the performance ability. That’s why Pogrom is so important for us. He is a strong, good-looking horse, a combination of beauty, type, power and athleticism and trainability. He is what everybody needs; otherwise we will have bred horses that are just for show, and we don’t want to do that. We’re trying to prove that Polish horses are not only pretty—not only beautiful and typey—but also correct, strong and good riding horses.”
